HomeopathyIf you have never consulted a homoeopath, the first visit can feel like a mystery. Will it be a two-minute prescription? A long interview? Why did your friend's doctor ask about her dreams and her fear of thunderstorms? Classical homeopathy works in a very particular way, and knowing what to expect beforehand makes the process smoother, and far more useful for you as a patient.
I have practised classical, individualised homeopathy for four decades now, and the method has stayed remarkably consistent: study the person in careful detail, then match one thoughtfully selected remedy to the whole picture, not merely to the name of the disease. Here is what that actually looks like inside the consulting room.
Classical homeopathy follows the original method of the discipline: one remedy at a time, chosen after a detailed study of the individual, given in the minimum dose needed, and reviewed patiently. It stands apart from the shortcut of handing out ready-made mixtures against a disease name. In classical work, the diagnosis is only the starting point; the real question is how the illness behaves in you, and what kind of person it is behaving in.
Two patients may both come in with migraine. One gets headaches before the rains, feels worse in the sun and craves ice-cold water; the other's attacks follow suppressed anger and ease only with firm pressure and a dark room. Same diagnosis, entirely different patterns, and in homeopathy, it is the pattern that decides the remedy.
The heart of your first visit is case-taking, a long, structured conversation about you. Expect questions that travel well beyond the main complaint: your sleep and dreams, appetite and thirst, sweat, moods, fears, how weather and seasons affect you, what makes each symptom better or worse, your past illnesses, and your family's health history. None of this is small talk. Each answer helps narrow hundreds of possible remedies down to the few that genuinely match your pattern.
Please do not polish your story, and do not hide details that feel odd or embarrassing. 'The pain feels like a tight band', 'I cry more when someone consoles me', 'I want to be left alone when I am ill', these are precisely the observations a homoeopath treasures, because they individualise your case.
This is the principle patients find most surprising. In classical practice there is no fixed 'homeopathic medicine for acidity' or 'for hair fall', there is a remedy for the particular person who happens to have acidity or hair fall. It is also why we gently discourage choosing remedies from the internet or borrowing a relative's pills: what fitted them may simply not fit you, however similar the complaints sound.
Once your case is recorded, your homoeopath studies it and selects a remedy and its potency. At our clinic, remedies are dispensed only from genuine, licensed homeopathic pharmacies, so you can be fully confident about what you are taking. You will usually be reviewed after three to six weeks; at follow-ups we track your symptoms closely and decide whether to wait, repeat the remedy or change it. Chronic complaints are assessed over months rather than days, which is true under any system of medicine.
Set aside 45 minutes to an hour for the first consultation. Follow-ups are shorter, but they matter just as much: careful observation between visits is half the treatment.
Let me be direct here, because this is the question I am asked most often. If you take prescribed medicines, for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, asthma or anything else, you continue them exactly as prescribed. Classical homeopathy at a responsible clinic runs alongside essential conventional care, never in place of it, and any change to your conventional medicines is made only by the doctor who prescribed them. Emergencies, chest pain, sudden breathing difficulty, serious injury, always go straight to emergency care; for breathing difficulty, call 108 first.
No special preparation is needed, but a little homework makes the consultation much richer:
