HomeopathyHandfuls of hair on the pillow, a widening parting, a drain to be cleared after every wash, hair fall brings people to my room in real distress, usually after months of experimenting with oils, serums and shampoos. The first thing I tell them is this: hair is a barometer of your general health. The useful question is not 'which product should I buy?' but 'why is my hair falling in the first place?'
Losing some strands every day is part of the natural hair cycle, old hairs make way for new ones, and many people notice extra shedding with the change of season. Shedding deserves proper attention when it stays heavy for several weeks, the ponytail feels visibly thinner, the parting widens, or the scalp begins to show through. At that point, investigation serves you far better than another shampoo.
In everyday practice, the most frequent findings behind hair fall are nutritional: low iron stores, inadequate protein, and deficiencies of vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Vegetarian diets that are light on protein, heavy menstrual periods and crash dieting are regular contributors. Hair is, biologically speaking, a non-essential tissue, when raw material runs short, the body economises on hair first. Protein-rich staples such as dal, eggs, paneer and sprouts, along with correction of tested deficiencies, often do more for hair than expensive serums ever will. One caution: do not self-prescribe iron without a blood test, as excess iron carries harms of its own.
Thyroid imbalance, both underactive and overactive, shows up in the hair long before most people suspect it. Hormonal shifts matter too: PCOS in young women, the months after childbirth, and the years around menopause. A major stress or illness, high fever, dengue, typhoid, surgery, bereavement, can push a large share of follicles into their resting phase at once, causing dramatic shedding two to three months later. This pattern, called telogen effluvium, usually recovers once the trigger has passed; post-partum shedding, alarming as it looks in the comb, also settles for most mothers over time.
And then there is heredity: pattern hair loss in men and women, where follicles slowly miniaturise over the years. Each cause needs a different response, which is why guessing, or treating every case with the same oil, is a poor strategy.
Before treating hair fall, it is sensible to check haemoglobin and ferritin, thyroid function, vitamin B12 and vitamin D, and, in women with irregular cycles or acne, a hormonal work-up. At our clinic this is straightforward: physicians, gynaecologists and skin specialists practise under the same roof as the homoeopaths, so underlying causes are identified rather than assumed. One rule is non-negotiable: if you already take thyroid medicine, continue it exactly as prescribed. Homeopathic treatment runs alongside it, never in its place.
Constitutional treatment studies the person on whom the hair is falling. Case-taking covers your diet and digestion, sleep, stress patterns, scalp condition, dandruff, itching, oiliness, your family history, and the events that preceded the shedding. From this whole picture an individualised remedy is selected, aiming to support the body while deficiencies are corrected and to address the tendency itself. Many patients find that shedding settles gradually as sleep, digestion and stress improve, with regrowth following slowly where follicles remain healthy.
Honesty demands one caveat: where follicles have been lost to long-standing pattern baldness, no system of medicine can conjure them back. A responsible homoeopath will examine your scalp and tell you what is realistic in your particular case, rather than selling you certainty.
Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, and a disturbed shedding cycle takes months to turn around under any treatment. Judge progress with monthly photographs taken in the same light, not with daily strand-counting, and give any treatment a fair review at eight to twelve weeks. Meanwhile, a few habits protect the hair you have:
