Health GuidesAlmost everyone in India has felt it at some point, that burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste rising into the throat, bloating, or belching after a heavy meal. Occasional acidity is normal. But when heartburn and reflux keep coming back week after week, it may be gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, better known as GERD.
GERD happens when acid from the stomach flows back up into the food pipe more often than it should. The good news is that most people improve a great deal with the right food and lifestyle changes. Understanding why symptoms return is the first step to breaking the cycle for good.
Reflux tends to return because the habits that trigger it are woven into daily life. Large, late, oily, or spicy meals, irregular eating, too much tea, coffee, or aerated drinks, smoking, alcohol, and carrying extra weight around the abdomen all push acid upward. Stress and poor sleep make the gut even more sensitive.
Lying down soon after eating is another common culprit, especially with our habit of a heavy dinner followed straight by bed. When these triggers stay in place, no tablet can keep symptoms away for long. That is why lasting relief comes from changing the pattern, not only from medicine.
The most effective steps are simple and steady. Eat smaller portions, chew slowly, and stop before you feel overly full. Keep a gap of two to three hours between dinner and bedtime, and take a short walk after meals instead of lying down.
Notice your personal triggers, since they vary from person to person. Common ones include fried food, very spicy curries, citrus, tomato-heavy dishes, chocolate, mint, coffee, and fizzy drinks. Raising the head end of your bed and losing even a little weight around the waist can bring noticeable relief.
Reaching for an antacid now and then is fine. The problem begins when you find yourself needing them almost every day just to get through, or steadily increasing the dose on your own. That pattern is a signal that something needs proper evaluation, not a cue to keep buying stronger tablets over the counter.
Long-standing reflux that is never assessed can, over time, irritate and damage the food pipe. If you have relied on antacids or acid-reducing medicines daily for weeks, please see a doctor. And never stop a medicine your doctor has already prescribed on your own, speak with them first about adjusting it.
Some symptoms mean you should be checked without delay, because they can point to something more serious than ordinary acidity. The single most important thing to remember is this: chest pain is not always gas.
Chest pain or pressure, especially with sweating, breathlessness, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back, can be a heart attack, not acidity. Do not assume it is gas and wait it out. Call 108 or reach an emergency department immediately.
