HomeopathyHomeopathy attracts strong opinions, devoted believers on one side, firm sceptics on the other, and in between, ordinary patients who simply want to know what is true before they spend their time and money. After twenty years in practice I have heard every myth in circulation, and I would rather answer them honestly than defensively. Here are the five I hear most often in my consulting room, starting with the most serious one.
I take this accusation seriously, because in the places where it has been true, it is a betrayal of the patient. Genuine homeopathic remedies contain no steroids. The myth persists because unlicensed or unethical dispensers have, in reported instances, adulterated pills to force dramatic overnight results in skin and asthma complaints, and because quick relief can invite suspicion all by itself. The protection is straightforward: take remedies only from a qualified homoeopath dispensing from licensed homeopathic pharmacies, the only source our clinic uses, and remember that genuine remedies can be laboratory-tested for purity whenever you want that reassurance.
I will not pretend this debate does not exist. Homeopathic dilutions go beyond the point where chemistry expects molecules of the original substance to remain, and mainstream science remains genuinely sceptical about how such remedies could act. Some clinical studies report effects, others find none, and reviews disagree, that is what an unsettled evidence base looks like. You deserve to hear all of this stated plainly by a homoeopath, not only by critics.
What I can add from practice: many patients, including some who arrived deeply sceptical, report meaningful improvement in long-standing complaints under individualised treatment. We keep the assessment honest by tracking objective markers, laboratory reports, photographs, the frequency and severity of episodes, and by insisting that homeopathy runs alongside conventional care, so nothing essential is ever left to belief alone. My advice: try it with your eyes open, measure, and judge by your own results.
Half-true, and worth unpacking honestly. In short-lived, acute complaints, a well-selected remedy is expected to act within a sensible time, hours to days, not months. What genuinely takes time is chronic disease: the eczema of ten years, the migraines since college, the child who falls ill every month. Chronic conditions demand months of consistent treatment under every system of medicine, conventional care for the same problems is also long-term, often lifelong. Homeopathy is not uniquely slow; chronic illness is slow, and it is more honest to say so than to promise a speed nobody can deliver.
Classical tradition did restrict strong substances, raw onion, garlic, coffee, camphor, mint, around remedy doses, and some prescribers still advise keeping them away from the medicine. The practical position most modern homoeopaths take is moderation rather than monkhood: eat your normal home food, keep strong-smelling substances about half an hour away from the dose, and follow the specific instructions given with your remedy. A treatment that demanded an unliveable diet would not survive real Indian kitchens, and it does not need to. If a particular food demonstrably worsens your complaint, limiting it is common sense, not a homeopathic ritual.
You can, and often you must. Never stop prescribed conventional medicines, inhalers, thyroid tablets, blood pressure or diabetes medicines, anti-epileptics, to 'give homeopathy a fair chance'. Stopping them can be genuinely dangerous, and no ethical homoeopath will ask it of you; at our clinic this is written into how we practise. The sensible arrangement is transparency: your physician and your homoeopath each know everything you take, emergencies go to emergency care first, call 108 for breathing difficulty, and any reduction in conventional medicine happens only through the doctor who prescribed it, guided by your reports and progress.
Whichever clinic you eventually choose, ours or any other, carry these questions with you. Good practitioners welcome them:
