HomeopathyParents are the most careful patients who enter my room, and rightly so. The questions come quickly: Is homeopathy actually safe for my child? Are the doses different from adult doses? Can remedies run alongside what our paediatrician has prescribed? Will my fussy four-year-old even take them? After twenty years of treating children, here are my honest answers to the questions parents ask most.
Genuine homeopathic remedies, sourced, as ours are, only from licensed homeopathic pharmacies, are highly diluted preparations, and children generally take them without a fuss; the small sweet globules help enormously. In that narrow sense, yes, they are gentle. But 'safe' has a second half that matters more: safety lies in how homeopathy is used. That means a proper diagnosis before treatment, honest referral when a child needs conventional care, and never delaying urgent treatment while waiting for a remedy to act. Gentle medicine used carelessly is not safe medicine.
One related reassurance: the fear that homeopathic pills are secretly laced with steroids comes from unlicensed, adulterated dispensing, not from genuine remedies, which can be laboratory-tested for purity. Source matters; insist on it, wherever you take your child.
Parents used to syrup bottles and weight-based charts naturally ask how children's doses are calculated. Homeopathic posology works differently: what is individualised is the remedy itself, its potency and how often it is repeated, decided from the child's complete picture rather than body weight alone. A few practical rules keep things sensible: follow the schedule exactly as written, resist the urge to repeat doses at every sniffle, tell us about every medicine your child already takes, and store all medicines, homeopathic ones included, out of children's reach as a matter of good discipline.
Families meet homeopathy in two modes, and knowing which one you are in keeps expectations fair. Acute care addresses a current, self-limiting episode, a cold, a difficult teething night, an upset tummy after a birthday party, where a well-chosen remedy is expected to support comfort and recovery. Constitutional care is the longer project: a detailed study of your child's nature, sleep, appetite, fears and illness pattern, followed by an individualised remedy that is reviewed over months, aimed at the tendency behind repeated episodes.
A large part of my practice is the child who is 'always falling ill', recurrent colds, cough and tonsillitis with every change of season, dust allergies and a tendency to wheeze. The other regulars: poor appetite and fussy eating, constipation, teething troubles, bedwetting beyond the usual age, skin complaints such as eczema, and, more with each passing year, exam anxiety, irritability and disturbed sleep. Constitutional treatment aims to reduce how often and how severely these recur, and many parents report episodes becoming less frequent over months of treatment.
I say 'months' deliberately. Rebuilding a child's tendency to recurrent illness is patient work, and it is fairer to tell you so at the outset than to promise a transformation by next week.
Let me be unambiguous here, because a medical website should be: homeopathy is not a substitute for childhood vaccination. Follow the immunisation schedule your paediatrician advises, fully and on time. Equally, if your child is on prescribed treatment, an inhaler for wheezing, antibiotics for an active infection, thyroid or anti-epileptic medicines, these continue exactly as prescribed. Homeopathy here works alongside paediatric care, not in its place; we share young patients with the paediatricians in this building every week, and any change to conventional medicines is the prescribing doctor's decision alone.
Children can go from playful to seriously unwell within hours, and no remedy, ours included, should ever delay urgent care. Trust your instinct as a parent: if your child looks seriously ill to you, that alone is reason enough to go. Head straight to a doctor or hospital if you notice:
Used sensibly, correct diagnosis first, genuine remedies, paediatrician kept in the loop, homeopathy can be a gentle companion through childhood's recurring complaints.
