Chakkar (Dizziness): Common Causes, Safe Home Care, and When It Is an Emergency

When chakkar hits, the room tips, your stomach turns, and your first instinct is to grab your phone and search chakkar ka karan aur gharelu upay. That is a very human thing to do. Most people who feel chakkar aana are frightened, and most of the time the cause turns out to be something common and manageable.

Let me be honest with you as an ENT who sees this every week here in Viman Nagar. Home remedies have their place, but they only help once you know what is actually causing the spinning. A few causes are serious, and no gharelu upay will fix those. So before anything else, please read the warning signs below.

First, When Chakkar Is An Emergency (Call 108)

Some dizziness is a sign of a stroke or another serious problem in the brain. Do not wait, do not keep searching, do not sip a home remedy. Call 108 or get to the nearest emergency department at once if your chakkar comes with any of these:

  • Sudden, severe spinning together with slurred or slow speech
  • Drooping or weakness on one side of the face
  • Double vision or a sudden loss of vision
  • Weakness or numbness in an arm or a leg, often on one side
  • Severe unsteadiness where you simply cannot stand or walk
  • The worst headache of your life, or a sudden crushing headache

These are not ENT problems, and we do not treat them at our outpatient clinic. They need a hospital with a neurologist and emergency care, and every minute counts. If you are unsure, treat it as an emergency and call 108.

Common Causes of Chakkar (Chakkar Ka Karan)

When the dangerous signs are absent, the usual causes are far less scary. Knowing the common chakkar ka karan helps you stay calm and take the right next step.

  • Loose ear crystals (BPPV): brief but intense spinning triggered when you roll over in bed, look up, or bend down. This is the single most common cause I see.
  • Dehydration: a hot Pune afternoon, skipped meals, and too little water, and your head starts to swim.
  • A drop in blood pressure on standing: you rise quickly from a chair or bed and feel a wave of lightheadedness.
  • Inner ear trouble: an infection or fluid problem that upsets your balance system.
  • Anxiety and stress: fast breathing and tension can create a very real floaty, off balance feeling.

Safe Gharelu Upay You Can Try Right Now

If none of the emergency signs are present, here is honest, safe self care. None of this is a cure, but it keeps you safe during a spell and settles the common causes.

  • Sit or lie down straight away. Stay still and fix your eyes on one steady point until the spinning eases.
  • Do not drive and do not ride a two-wheeler while you feel chakkar. Take an auto or ask someone to bring you.
  • Sip water slowly and keep sipping through the day, especially in the heat.
  • Stand up in stages: sit on the edge of the bed, wait a moment, then rise slowly.
  • Avoid sudden head movements, screens, and bright flashing light during a spell.
  • Rest, and note what you were doing when it started. That clue helps your doctor a great deal.

One thing to avoid: do not swallow a random over-the-counter tablet just because a neighbour or a search result suggested it. The right medicine depends entirely on the cause found on examination, and a random pill can mask a serious problem while it quietly gets worse.

When To See An ENT

Book a proper ENT check if the chakkar keeps coming back, lasts more than a day or two, or comes with hearing changes, ringing, or a blocked, full feeling in the ear. Real relief usually follows the correct diagnosis, not a trick or a single tablet.

In clinic I start with a careful history and a bedside balance examination. If your story points to loose ear crystals, I use the Dix-Hallpike positioning test to confirm which ear canal is involved. Once the canal is confirmed, I can perform the Epley manoeuvre (canalith repositioning) in clinic, though I cannot promise it on the same day, and I will teach you the Brandt-Daroff home exercises to continue safely at home. If your balance or hearing needs it, we also do audiometry here, and for peripheral vertigo we can manage your symptoms medically, chosen for your specific cause rather than by guesswork.

If instead your examination suggests the dizziness is coming from the brain rather than the ear, that is beyond what an outpatient ENT clinic can handle. I will tell you plainly and direct you to a neurologist and the right hospital, because that care is not something we offer here.

Some patients also ask about homeopathy. Our clinic has a separate homeopathy department where Dr. Rita Shah offers constitutional management. Results vary from person to person, it is not a cure, and it runs alongside a proper conventional assessment, never in place of emergency care. If you would like to explore it, we can guide you.
