Dental CareNo dental procedure carries more unearned fear than the root canal. Patients arrive braced for the worst, and leave surprised that it felt like little more than getting a filling. The pain people associate with root canals is almost always the toothache before treatment; the procedure is what ends that pain.
Deep inside every tooth is the pulp, a small chamber of nerves and blood vessels. When decay or a crack lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed and infected. Because it's sealed inside hard tooth structure, the pressure has nowhere to go. That's the throbbing, sleep-destroying pain that finally brings people to the clinic.
Most root canals at our clinic finish in one or two sittings of 45–60 minutes. During the procedure you'll feel vibration and pressure, not pain. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles with a simple painkiller.
Patients sometimes ask to simply remove the tooth instead. It's usually the wrong trade: a natural tooth, even a root-canal-treated one, chews better, lasts longer and costs less over a lifetime than any replacement. Extraction is the right choice only when a tooth is genuinely beyond saving, and we'll tell you honestly which side of that line yours is on.
If a toothache is keeping you up at night, don't wait for it to 'settle', infections don't negotiate. Book a dental consultation and let's end the pain properly.
