Diabetes CareType 2 diabetes rarely arrives with a dramatic announcement. It usually creeps in quietly over months or years, and the early signs are so ordinary that most people brush them aside as tiredness, ageing or simply the effect of a busy life.
That is exactly why so many people are diagnosed late, sometimes only when a complication appears. The good news is that these early clues are easy to recognise once you know what to look for, and testing is simple, quick and widely available.
When blood sugar rises, your kidneys work harder to remove the extra glucose through urine. This pulls water out with it, so you pass urine more often, including waking at night, and you feel thirsty even after drinking. Many people simply carry a bigger water bottle and never stop to ask why the thirst started.
It is worth paying attention if you suddenly find yourself finishing several extra glasses of water, or getting up two or three times a night to pass urine when this was never your habit before. These shifts are gradual, so a family member sometimes notices the change before you do.
When sugar cannot enter your cells properly, your body struggles to use it for energy. The result is a deep, nagging fatigue that does not lift with a good night of sleep. It is easy to blame work or age, but persistent tiredness alongside other signs truly deserves a blood test.
This kind of fatigue is different from ordinary end-of-day tiredness. It can make concentration harder, leave your limbs feeling heavy, and slowly take the enjoyment out of activities you normally like. When it lingers for weeks without a clear reason, it is a signal worth checking, not a personal failing.
High blood sugar affects both circulation and the immune system, so cuts, boils and scratches take longer to heal. Repeated skin infections, gum problems, or fungal infections that keep coming back can all be quiet signals that sugar levels are running high.
Recurring urinary infections, and in some people repeated itching or infections in the genital area, can be an early pointer too. These are common problems on their own, so they are easy to treat and forget, but a pattern of them alongside thirst or fatigue is worth mentioning to your doctor.
Extra sugar can pull fluid into the lens of the eye, temporarily blurring your vision. Some people first notice this when their spectacle number seems to keep changing. Tingling or numbness in the feet, and unexplained weight loss despite a normal appetite, are other clues that are well worth taking seriously.
Reassuringly, this early blurring often improves once blood sugar is brought under control, so it is not a reason to rush out and change your spectacles. It is, however, a very good reason to have your sugar checked before assuming your eyes alone are the problem.
You do not need to wait for symptoms before you test. Screening is sensible for most adults from around the mid-thirties, and earlier if you carry added risk. If you already notice any of the signs above, please do not postpone a check.
A simple fasting blood sugar test or an HbA1c can usually give clear answers, and both are widely available with same-day support at most clinics.
Very high blood sugar can occasionally cause a dangerous state that needs urgent care. If you or someone near you shows heavy, rapid breathing, repeated vomiting, severe drowsiness, confusion or fainting, treat it as an emergency and call 108 straight away rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
