Diabetes CareHbA1c Test in Pune: Your 3-Month Sugar Report Card
Fasting sugar is a snapshot; HbA1c is the whole film. When glucose circulates in your blood, some of it sticks to the hemoglobin in your red blood cells, and stays stuck for the cell's roughly three-month lifespan. Measuring that 'sugar-coated' percentage reveals your average control across the last 90 days, including every meal, festival and missed walk. It can't be gamed by eating carefully for two days before the test.
Reading your number
- Below 5.7%, normal.
- 5.7% to 6.4%, prediabetes: the golden window where diet and exercise alone can often turn things around.
- 6.5% or above, diabetes range.
- Every 1% drop in HbA1c cuts the risk of small-vessel complications (eyes, kidneys, nerves) by roughly a third, small numbers, huge stakes.
Your HbA1c quietly carries the months it covers
Because the test looks back over roughly three months, it always carries whatever those particular months held. An HbA1c taken in late November or December sits on top of the festival weeks, the sweets that came home from other people's houses, the fried food, the wedding dinners. The same person tested in a quieter stretch of the year will often see a different number without having changed anything about their treatment. This is not a reason to time the test for a flattering month. It is a reason to read the result with a calendar next to it, so that a rise is understood rather than panicked over and a good number is not mistaken for permanent.
Everyday home eating shapes it in the same slow way, which is why we ask about ordinary weeks and not just the celebrations. Rice or chapati portions at a late dinner after a long commute, the second helping, the tea taken sweet several times a day at the office, all of it averages into the same number. Fasting days followed by feast days are a good example, because the large swings on either side can flatten into a reasonable looking average while your day to day readings were anything but steady. That is one reason your HbA1c and your glucometer sometimes seem to tell different stories, and both are worth showing us.
Your target is personal
The textbook goal of 'below 7%' is a starting point, not a universal rule. A young, newly diagnosed patient may aim tighter; an older adult prone to hypoglycemia may be safest slightly higher. Chasing a perfect number at the cost of frequent sugar crashes causes more harm than the number it prevents, your target should be set with your doctor, for your life.
What moves the needle
Between tests, three things shift HbA1c most reliably: consistent post-meal walks (even ten minutes), protein-and-fibre-first meals that blunt glucose spikes, and taking medication as actually prescribed rather than as remembered. For patients whose numbers won't budge, a two-week CGM sensor usually finds the hidden culprit, a spiking breakfast, or silent night-time lows that trigger morning highs.
Test every three months while treatment is being adjusted, six-monthly once stable. If you don't know your last HbA1c, or it's been over six months, that's your sign. It's a simple, no-fasting blood test, and it's the single most useful number in diabetes care.
