Allergy CareIf your sneezing begins the moment you lie down at night, or you wake every morning with a blocked nose and itchy, watery eyes, house dust mites deserve a close look. These tiny creatures are among the commonest causes of indoor allergy in Indian homes, and Pune's humid monsoon months and closed, air-conditioned bedrooms suit them perfectly.
The encouraging part is that dust mite allergy responds well to a combination of sensible home measures and correct medical treatment. As an ENT specialist, I find myself explaining the same few points to patients almost every week, so here they are, in one place.
Dust mites are microscopic eight-legged relatives of spiders, far too small to see with the naked eye. They do not bite or sting anyone. The allergy actually comes from proteins in their droppings and body fragments, which mix into ordinary household dust. When a sensitive person breathes this in, the immune system wrongly treats it as a threat and responds with sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itching and sometimes cough or wheeze. Mites feed on the tiny flakes of skin we all shed every day, and they thrive wherever it is warm and humid, which explains almost everything about where they gather in your home.
Consider what a mattress offers a mite: warmth from your body for seven or eight hours every night, moisture from sweat and breath, and a steady supply of shed skin. Pillows, blankets, quilts, soft toys and heavy curtains offer much the same hospitality. You then spend the entire night with your nose just inches from the highest concentration of mite allergen in the whole house, which is precisely why symptoms peak when you get into bed and again when you wake.
Making the bed, shaking out blankets or dry sweeping the bedroom stirs settled allergen back into the air, which is why some people sneeze hardest while cleaning.
Dust mite allergy is usually a year-round problem rather than a strictly seasonal one, though many of my patients in Pune notice it worsening during and just after the monsoon, when indoor humidity climbs. Typical clues include sneezing bouts on waking, a persistently blocked or running nose, an itchy nose and palate, disturbed sleep, mouth breathing, snoring and tiredness through the day. In people who also have asthma, mites are a common trigger for night-time cough and wheeze. If you or your child ever develops severe breathing difficulty, treat it as an emergency and call 108 immediately rather than waiting for it to pass.
No single measure eliminates mites completely, and any product promising total removal is overpromising. What genuinely helps is layering several habits together, and concentrating your effort on the bedroom, where your exposure is longest and closest.
Room fresheners and incense sticks only mask smells, and the smoke can further irritate an allergic nose. Dry sweeping largely relocates allergen rather than removing it. Expensive gadgets vary widely in usefulness, a vacuum cleaner with a good filter is a helpful support, but it cannot replace the basics above. And please remember that mites are not a verdict on your housekeeping: even the cleanest homes have them. The goal is fewer mites and less allergen, not an impossible zero.
If symptoms are disturbing sleep, affecting work or school, or keep returning despite a genuine month of home measures, it is time for a proper evaluation. An ENT examination can confirm allergic rhinitis, rule out look-alikes such as a deviated septum, nasal polyps or a sinus infection, and guide treatment, typically antihistamines, saline nasal rinses and a steroid nasal spray used correctly and consistently. If you already use an inhaler or a prescribed spray, continue it exactly as advised; never stop it on your own, even when you feel better.
Some families also wish to add classical homeopathy for long-term symptom control. At our clinic, homeopathy always runs alongside essential conventional treatment, never as a replacement for it.
