Dust Allergy in Pune: What Helps Your Nose and Eyes
If you sneeze in bursts every time you shake out the bedsheet, or your eyes turn red and watery on the two-wheeler ride down New Airport Road, you already know the feeling that many Pune patients call dhool se allergy. The nose blocks, then runs, you clear your throat over and over, and by evening you are simply tired of it.
I see this every week at our Viman Nagar clinic, and the first thing I tell people is honest and simple. Dust allergy is real, it is common in a dusty, building-heavy city like ours, and it can be brought under good control. It is managed, not magically cured. Once you accept that, the rest becomes practical.
What dhool se allergy actually is
Dhool is not one single thing. Indoors, the usual culprit is the house dust mite, a tiny creature that lives in bedding, pillows, mattresses, soft toys and old upholstery, and feeds on the flakes of skin we all shed. Outdoors, it is the fine road dust and construction dust that hangs over Kharadi, Viman Nagar and the New Airport Road stretch, especially in dry months and near active building sites.
When you have dhool ki allergy, your immune system has decided these harmless particles are a threat and reacts to them. That is why you get the sneezing, the itch, the blocked or running nose, and the watering eyes. Your body is not weak, it is over-reacting. The aim of treatment is to calm that reaction and cut your exposure, not to promise it will never happen again.
Start at home: avoidance comes first
Before any test or clinic visit, the biggest gains for most people come from reducing contact with dhool at home and on the commute. None of this needs a consultation, and it often makes a real difference over a few weeks.
- Wash bedsheets, pillow covers and blankets often in hot water, and air out mattresses and pillows in the sun.
- Swap heavy curtains, thick rugs and piled-up soft toys for things you can wash or wipe, especially in the bedroom where you spend the whole night.
- Damp-wipe and damp-mop instead of dry dusting, which just throws dhool back into the air. If you use a vacuum, one with a good filter helps.
- Keep windows shut during peak traffic hours and on windy, dusty days, and let a room settle before you sleep in it.
- Wear a simple mask on dusty commutes and near construction, on the two-wheeler and in autos, and rinse your face and eyes with clean water when you reach home.
- If a pet sleeps on your bed, keep it off the bedding, and change out of outdoor clothes before you lie down.
When a clinic visit genuinely adds value
If home measures are not enough, or you cannot tell what is setting you off, that is where an ENT review earns its place. In clinic I look inside your nose and check for a deviated septum, swollen turbinates, nasal polyps or a lingering infection, because these can mimic or worsen dust allergy and change what will actually help you. A blocked nose is not always just allergy.
To pin down triggers, we can arrange a specific-IgE blood allergy panel that screens for common indoor and outdoor allergens, from house dust mite to many everyday items. One point I always explain: a positive result means your body is sensitised to that item, and it must be read together with your real symptoms. A raised number on paper that never troubles you in daily life is not, on its own, a reason to panic. The test guides advice, it does not replace the story you tell me.
Some patients also ask about homeopathy. We have a separate homeopathy department for that, where treatment is approached as constitutional management, chosen for the individual. Results vary from person to person, it sits alongside a proper conventional assessment rather than in place of one, and it is never a substitute for emergency care.
Home care and a clinic review: what each one does
| Step | What it does | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Home avoidance | Cuts your daily contact with dust mite and road dust | First line for almost everyone, low effort, start today |
| ENT nasal review | Checks the nose for other causes and confirms the picture | Useful when home care is not enough or the block is one-sided |
| Specific-IgE blood panel | Screens which allergens your body reacts to | Read with your symptoms, not in isolation |
| Homeopathy (separate department) | Constitutional management as an individual option | Results vary, alongside conventional care, not for emergencies |
What about a tablet for dhool ki allergy?
Almost everyone wants the name of one tablet that ends it. The honest answer is that the right medicine depends on what we find on examination, so I will not hand out a drug name over a blog. A random over-the-counter tablet can settle symptoms for a few hours while quietly masking a cause that needed a proper look, like a sinus infection or polyps. General education here, yes. A prescription without seeing your nose, no.
Red flags: when it is not allergy, call 108
Ordinary dust allergy is miserable but not dangerous. A severe allergic reaction is a different matter, and it is an emergency. Call 108 or go straight to the nearest emergency department if you or someone with you has any of these:
- Difficulty breathing, or a tight, wheezing chest.
- Swelling of the throat, tongue or lips, or a sudden change in the voice.
- A feeling of the throat closing, or trouble swallowing.
- Faintness, collapse, or a sudden widespread rash along with the above.
This picture can be anaphylaxis, and an ordinary antihistamine tablet does not treat it. It needs emergency care without delay. Do not sit at home waiting to see if it settles.
What we do not offer, and where we send you
So it is clear, our clinic is an outpatient ENT and general set-up. We do not give allergy shots or immunotherapy (including the under-the-tongue drops some people ask about), and we do not run an anaphylaxis or intensive-care service. If your case needs desensitisation treatment or specialist immunology care, we will tell you plainly and guide you to the right centre rather than stretch beyond what we do well.
