Dental Cleaning and Scaling: Myths That Stop People from GoingDental Care

Dental Cleaning and Scaling: Myths That Stop People from Going

If I had to pick one dental procedure that patients resist the most despite it being the most helpful, it would be scaling, or what patients call cleaning. The resistance is almost always rooted in a set of myths passed around so widely that they feel like fact. Let me address them one by one.

Myth: scaling weakens the teeth

This is the most persistent myth. Scaling removes hardened deposits of tartar (calculus) that have accumulated on and around your teeth, especially near the gum line and between teeth. The teeth themselves are not touched in a way that weakens them. What patients sometimes mistake for weakness is the temporary sensitivity that can follow scaling, which settles within a few days to a couple of weeks.

Myth: scaling creates gaps between teeth

This one comes from a misunderstanding. When tartar builds up between teeth, it fills the spaces and you do not notice them. Once the tartar is removed, the natural gaps between teeth become visible again. Those gaps were already there, hidden behind a layer of calcified bacteria. Leaving the tartar in place may look better for a while, but it is actively destroying the bone and gum that hold your teeth in place.

Myth: once you get scaling done you have to keep doing it

Tartar forms on everyone's teeth over time, no matter how well you brush and floss. It is hardened plaque that cannot be removed with a toothbrush alone. Regular scaling, typically once every six to twelve months depending on your build-up rate, is preventive maintenance, not a dependency. You are not getting scaling because you got scaling before. You are getting it because tartar has built up again, just as it does for everyone.

Myth: scaling makes teeth sensitive permanently

Some people experience mild sensitivity to cold or air for a few days after scaling. This happens because the tartar was covering the tooth surface near the gum line, and once it is removed, the underlying tooth surface is briefly exposed. This sensitivity almost always fades on its own. Using a sensitivity toothpaste for a couple of weeks after the procedure helps.

What happens if you skip scaling

  • Tartar irritates the gums, causing gingivitis (red, swollen, bleeding gums).
  • Left untreated, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth starts to erode.
  • Advanced periodontitis leads to loose teeth and eventually tooth loss, which is actually the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
  • Persistent gum disease is also linked to poor blood sugar control in people with diabetes and may affect heart health.

What to expect during a scaling session

The dentist uses an ultrasonic scaler, a vibrating instrument that dislodges tartar with water spray. It sounds louder than it feels. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort, especially in areas with heavy build-up, but it is not painful for most people. The session typically takes 20 to 40 minutes. You can eat normally afterwards, though avoiding very hot or cold foods for a day helps if there is any sensitivity.
