Sildenafil (Viagra): Uses, Side Effects, an Honest Guide

If you have searched for a Viagra tablet late at night, you are not alone, and there is nothing to feel ashamed about. Erection problems are common, they are medical, and they are usually treatable. This guide explains what sildenafil, the drug sold as Viagra and under many generic brands, actually does. It covers who should never take it, what it costs in India, and why a proper doctor visit matters before you buy a single tablet.

What sildenafil actually does

Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. In plain terms, it relaxes the blood vessels that supply the penis, so blood can flow in more easily when you are aroused. That last part matters. Sildenafil does not create desire, and it does not work on its own. Without sexual arousal, the tablet will do very little. It is a helper for blood flow, not a switch for wanting sex. Understanding this saves a lot of disappointment and a lot of wasted money.

Sex medicine is prescription-only in India

In India, sildenafil is a Schedule H drug. That means it is a sex medicine you are meant to take only on a doctor's prescription, from a licensed pharmacy. This rule is not there to make your life difficult. It exists because the tablet interacts with other medicines and is genuinely dangerous for some hearts. Any website or shop selling it freely, without a prescription, is already breaking the rule, and that should make you cautious about everything else they claim.

Who must never take a Viagra tablet

Some men must not take sildenafil at all, because the combination can drop blood pressure to a dangerous level. Please read this list slowly.

  • Anyone taking nitrate heart medicines, for example nitroglycerine or isosorbide, for chest pain or angina. Sildenafil plus nitrates can cause a sudden, severe fall in blood pressure.
  • Anyone who has had a recent heart attack or stroke.
  • Anyone with severe heart disease, unstable angina or heart failure, unless a cardiologist has cleared them.
  • Anyone taking certain blood pressure medicines called alpha-blockers, without medical advice.
  • Anyone who has had a bad reaction to sildenafil in the past.

You may have seen 100mg of Viagra quoted online as if it were the obvious dose to grab. Please do not think that way. The strength of any tablet is a decision for your doctor, never for a shopkeeper, a friend, or an advertisement. Your doctor decides the strength after checking your heart, your other medicines and your history.

Common side effects

Even when sildenafil suits you, it can cause side effects. Most are mild and pass on their own.

  • Headache
  • Facial flushing or a warm face
  • A blocked or runny nose
  • Indigestion or acidity
  • Mild changes in vision, such as a blue tinge or light sensitivity
  • Dizziness

Some effects are red flags. If you get an erection that is painful or lasts more than a few hours, that is an emergency, and you should reach a hospital quickly. Sudden loss of vision or hearing also needs urgent care. If you feel chest pain, breathlessness or faintness during sex, treat it as a possible heart problem and call 108.

Why a doctor visit comes first

Erection trouble is often the body's early warning light. The same vessels that supply the penis are small and delicate, so they can struggle before the bigger arteries of the heart do. New or worsening erection problems can be an early sign of heart or vessel disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, hormonal issues, stress or low mood. A tablet may cover the symptom while the real cause keeps growing quietly. A short, confidential consultation can check your blood pressure, sugar and history, and often finds something simple and treatable.

Viagra tablet cost, and the counterfeit trap

Here is the honest part about money. Generic sildenafil is inexpensive in India. It is one of the more affordable prescription medicines, which is why the loud online ads selling 'imported', 'original' or 'extra strong' pills at high prices deserve real suspicion. You are usually paying more for a worse and riskier product.

Counterfeit tablets are a serious danger. Pills bought from unverified online sellers, spam messages or pavement shops may contain the wrong dose, no active drug at all, or harmful contaminants. Some 'ayurvedic power' or 'herbal timing' pills have been found spiked with hidden prescription drugs, which is especially dangerous if you have a heart condition and do not know what you are swallowing. If a genuine doctor has advised sildenafil for you, buy the exact brand and strength from a licensed pharmacy, and nowhere else.

The simple, safe path

  • See a doctor first, so the cause is checked, not just the symptom.
  • Never combine sildenafil with nitrate heart medicines.
  • Let your doctor decide if it suits you and at what strength.
  • Buy only from a licensed pharmacy, never from unverified online sellers.
  • Never stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own to make room for it.
