Women's HealthPregnant, Positive Test: What to Do Next, Step by Step
A pregnant positive test can feel exciting and a little overwhelming in the very same moment. The good news is that the first steps are simple and calm. You do not need to rush to a hospital tonight. What you do need is to confirm the result, protect the pregnancy with a few sensible changes, and book your first proper visit at the right time. Here is a clear, ordered plan for what to do next, written for real families and everyday life in Pune.
First, confirm the pregnant positive test
Home urine tests are quite accurate when used correctly, so one clear positive line is usually reliable. If the line was faint, repeat the test after two to three days using the first urine of the morning, when the pregnancy hormone is most concentrated. Your doctor can confirm the result properly with a blood test that measures the hormone, and later with an early scan. There is no need to keep buying kit after kit and testing again and again. One good positive, followed by a clinic visit, is enough.
Start folic acid without delay
Folic acid is one of the few things that genuinely helps in these early weeks. It lowers the chance of certain problems with the baby's brain and spine, which form very early, often before some women even realise they are pregnant. Because of that early timing, the sooner you start, the better. A daily folic acid tablet is recommended, and your doctor will confirm the right dose for you, especially if you have any medical conditions. If you can start today, start today.
What to stop, and what to be careful with
A few changes protect the pregnancy right from the start. None of them are complicated, and most families manage them easily once they know what to look out for.
- Stop smoking, and stay away from other people's smoke at home and at work.
- Stop all alcohol. There is no amount that is known to be safe in pregnancy.
- Stop self-medication. Do not take any tablet, tonic or herbal remedy without checking with a doctor first.
- Tell any doctor or dentist you see that you are pregnant, so that medicines can be chosen safely.
- Be sensible with tea, coffee and caffeine, and wash fruits and vegetables well before eating.
Book your first visit at 6 to 8 weeks
For most healthy women, the first pregnancy visit is best booked around 6 to 8 weeks, counted from the first day of your last period. Booking too early can mean a scan that is hard to read and a needless repeat. Booking too late means missing useful early checks. When you call, mention the date of your last period so the clinic can guide the timing. If you have bleeding, pain, or a history of pregnancy problems, say so, because you may need to be seen sooner.
What the first scan checks
The first scan is usually a gentle ultrasound. It looks for a few important things rather than fine detail, and it is an early reassurance rather than a full assessment.
- That the pregnancy is inside the womb, and not in a fallopian tube.
- The number of pregnancies, since twins are usually picked up here.
- An early heartbeat, once the pregnancy has grown enough to show one.
- A more accurate due date, based on the size of the pregnancy.
Early red flags to know from day one
Most early pregnancies are perfectly fine. Even so, it helps to know from the start which signs need urgent attention instead of a wait-and-see approach. Heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting, and severe pain low on one side of the tummy, need same-day care. These can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy, which is an emergency. If either happens, do not wait at home. Call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department at once.
A simple checklist for your first two weeks
- Start a daily folic acid tablet.
- Stop smoking, alcohol and any self-prescribed medicines.
- Note the first day of your last period, so your dates stay accurate.
- Book your first clinic visit for around 6 to 8 weeks.
- Drink enough water, eat regular balanced meals, and rest when you feel tired.
- Save an emergency number, and know your nearest hospital.
