Women's HealthA positive pregnancy test brings a rush of emotions, and usually one very practical question: what do I do now? The answer is simple. Book your first antenatal visit. This appointment lays the foundation for a healthy pregnancy, and knowing what will happen makes it far less daunting, especially if this is your first baby.
Here is a clear walk-through of the first visit, the tests and check-up schedule that usually follow, and the questions worth asking your doctor.
Ideally, see a gynaecologist as soon as your home pregnancy test turns positive, and certainly within the first 8 to 10 weeks. An early visit lets your doctor confirm the pregnancy, estimate your due date accurately, start folic acid and other supplements on time, and identify anything that needs closer monitoring. If you have diabetes, thyroid disease or high blood pressure, or have had a previous pregnancy loss, coming in early matters even more, because small adjustments made now can make a real difference later.
Note the first day of your last menstrual period before you come, since your due date is calculated from it. Carry any previous medical records, prescriptions and reports, along with a list of every medicine or supplement you take, including ayurvedic and homeopathic preparations. There is no need to come fasting unless you have specifically been asked to. And do bring your partner or a family member if you wish; two sets of ears are better than one at this visit.
Expect an unhurried conversation before any examination. Your doctor will ask about your last period, your general health, previous pregnancies, medicines, allergies, and your family history on both sides, since all of this shapes the plan of care for the months ahead.
The examination itself is gentle and simple: weight, blood pressure and a general physical check-up. Your doctor will then calculate your expected due date, discuss diet, supplements, work, travel and exercise, and answer whatever is on your mind. Nothing about the first antenatal visit is painful.
A set of routine tests establishes a baseline for the pregnancy. These usually include haemoglobin, blood group and Rh type, blood sugar, thyroid function, urine examination and screening for certain infections. An early ultrasound is often advised to confirm the due date and check that the pregnancy is developing in the right place. Every test has a purpose, and your doctor should be happy to explain it; at our clinic, fees are shared transparently in advance so there are no surprises.
For most healthy pregnancies, visits follow a familiar rhythm: roughly every four weeks until 28 weeks, every two weeks from 28 to 36 weeks, and weekly after that until delivery. Important scans are timed to specific windows, such as the nuchal translucency scan around 11 to 13 weeks and the detailed anomaly scan around 18 to 20 weeks. Treat this as a general guide rather than a fixed rule; your doctor will personalise the schedule to your health and how the pregnancy progresses. Between visits, note down anything you want to ask, and never hesitate to call the clinic earlier if something feels wrong.
No question is too small in pregnancy, and the first visit is the right time to build the habit of asking freely. Consider noting these down on your phone:
Most pregnancies progress smoothly, but a few symptoms need urgent attention at any stage: heavy vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, high fever, sudden swelling of the face or hands, severe headache or blurred vision, and, in the later months, noticeably reduced movements of the baby. If any of these occur, do not wait for your next appointment. Call 108 or reach the nearest emergency facility, and inform your doctor as soon as possible.
