Dolo 650 Uses, Dose and Safety: Paracetamol Explained

Dolo 650 is one of the most familiar names in Indian medicine cabinets. Behind that brand is a single ingredient, paracetamol, which is also sold as Calpol, Crocin and many generics. It is trusted for good reason, but familiar does not mean risk-free. Taken sensibly it is very safe. Taken in excess, or mixed unknowingly with other medicines that contain it, paracetamol can harm the liver. Here is an honest guide to using it well.

Dolo 650 uses: what paracetamol treats

Paracetamol brings down fever and eases mild to moderate pain. It does not treat the cause of an infection, and it is not a strong anti-inflammatory like some other painkillers. What it does is make you more comfortable while your body recovers. Among the many headache tablets sold across Indian chemists, a large share are simply paracetamol under a different name. Common reasons people reach for it include:

• Fever from viral illness, flu or after some vaccinations
• Headache and body ache
• Toothache and mild ear pain
• Period pain and backache
• Aches during dengue and other viral fevers, where it is often the preferred painkiller

How much paracetamol is safe for adults?

For most healthy adults, a 500 mg or 650 mg tablet is a usual single dose. The important ceiling to remember is the daily total: an adult should never exceed 4 grams, that is 4000 mg, in any 24-hour period. That works out to a strict upper limit, not a target to aim for. If you have liver disease, drink alcohol regularly, are underweight or eat very little, your safe limit is lower, and you should ask a doctor what is right for you. It is also wise not to pair paracetamol with alcohol on the same day. Always read the strength printed on your strip, because 500 mg and 650 mg tablets are not the same.

Gap between doses and how it works

Paracetamol is usually taken every 4 to 6 hours when needed, and not more often than that. Leaving at least 4 hours between doses gives the body time to clear the medicine. Taking the next dose too early is a common way people drift past the safe daily total without meaning to. If your fever or pain settles, there is no need to keep taking it by the clock. And if it does not settle after a couple of days of correct use, that is a signal to see a doctor rather than to take more.

Paracetamol for children

Children are where self-dosing goes wrong most often. A child's dose depends on body weight, not age, and it is worked out by a doctor or from clear paediatric packaging. Please do not copy adult tablets or guess from a sibling's dose. Using a syrup meant for a younger child, or giving an adult 650 mg tablet to a small child, can be dangerous. When your child has a fever, ask your paediatrician for the exact amount and how often to give it, and use the measuring cup that comes with the bottle.

The hidden paracetamol trap in cold and pain combos

This is the mistake we see most in clinic. Many cold, flu and body-pain combination medicines already contain paracetamol, even when the name on the front does not say so. If you take Dolo 650 for fever and also swallow a cold tablet for a blocked nose, you may be doubling your dose without realising it. Before combining medicines, read every label for the words paracetamol or acetaminophen. If two products both contain it, do not take them together. When in doubt, ask a pharmacist or doctor.

When a fever or headache needs a doctor

Paracetamol is a comfort measure, not a cure. Some fevers and headaches need proper assessment rather than another tablet. See a doctor promptly if you notice any of the signs below, and treat it as an emergency, calling 108, if a high fever comes with breathlessness, a stiff neck, a spreading rash or sudden confusion:

• Fever above 103 F, or any fever lasting more than two to three days
• Fever with a stiff neck, a spreading rash, breathlessness or confusion
• A very severe or sudden headache, or headache with weakness, slurred speech or vision loss
• Fever in a baby under three months, which always needs same-day medical review
• Yellow eyes, dark urine or right-side tummy pain, which can point to liver strain
