Iron-Deficiency Anaemia: Why Low Haemoglobin Leaves You Exhausted

If you have been dragging yourself through the day, climbing one flight of stairs in Viman Nagar and feeling as though you ran a marathon, please know this is not simply you being lazy or unfit. Many people who walk into our clinic tired, pale and short of breath turn out to have low haemoglobin, and once we find why, they often feel like themselves again.

Iron-deficiency anaemia is one of the most common reasons for that bone-deep tiredness, especially in women and in people who eat little iron. It is common and it is treatable. The important part is not just swallowing an iron pill, it is finding out why the iron ran low in the first place.

What iron-deficiency anaemia actually is

Your red blood cells carry a protein called haemoglobin, and haemoglobin needs iron to hold on to oxygen. Think of iron as the hook and oxygen as the bag it carries. When iron is low, your body cannot build enough good haemoglobin, so less oxygen reaches your muscles, your brain and your skin. Your heart then works harder to make up for it, and everything starts to feel like an effort.

Signs your body may be running low

The symptoms often creep in slowly, which is why so many people put up with them for months before checking. Watch for these:

  • Tiredness and weakness that rest does not fix
  • Breathlessness climbing stairs or walking to the auto stand
  • Pale skin, or pale inside the lower eyelid and nails
  • Dizziness or a light head when you stand up quickly
  • A racing or pounding heartbeat, even when sitting
  • Brittle nails, more hair fall than usual, and headaches
  • Odd cravings, sometimes for ice or mud (this is worth mentioning to your doctor)

Common reasons iron runs low

Anaemia is a signal, not the whole story. In our experience the low iron usually traces back to one of these:

  • Too little iron in the food you eat, common with limited or unbalanced diets
  • Heavy or long menstrual periods, one of the most frequent causes in women
  • Pregnancy, when your body needs far more iron than usual
  • Slow blood loss from the gut, for example from ulcers, piles or other bowel problems
  • Trouble absorbing iron, seen in some digestive conditions

This is exactly why we do not just hand you iron and send you off. If there is quiet bleeding somewhere, taking iron blindly can mask the real problem while it continues underneath.

How we diagnose it

The good news is that it starts with a simple blood test. A complete blood count shows your haemoglobin level and the size of your red cells. We usually add iron studies, including a test called ferritin, which reflects your body's iron stores. Together these tell us whether iron deficiency is the cause and how low the stores have fallen. Depending on your age, your symptoms and the likely cause, your doctor may suggest a few more tests to find the source of the loss.

Iron-rich foods and what helps absorption

Food is a real part of the answer. Some iron sources are absorbed more easily than others, and pairing them with vitamin C helps a lot, while tea and coffee right after a meal can block absorption.

Iron-rich foodsHelps your body absorb ironReduces absorption (space these apart)
Green leafy vegetables like spinach and methiVitamin C foods (lemon, amla, orange, guava)Tea and coffee taken with or just after meals
Dals, chana, rajma and other legumesSqueezing lemon over dal or sabziLarge amounts of milk or calcium at the same meal
Jaggery, dates, raisins and other dried fruitSprouting and soaking pulses before cookingExcess processed and refined foods crowding out iron sources
Eggs, chicken, fish and liver for those who eat themCooking in an iron pan for some dishesAntacids taken close to iron-rich meals

Food alone may not be enough if your stores are very low or if you are losing iron faster than you can eat it. That is a conversation to have with your doctor rather than a decision to make at the chemist counter. Please do not keep yourself on iron supplements month after month on your own, because too much iron can cause its own problems and can hide the cause we need to find.

When to see a doctor

Book a consultation if your tiredness has lasted for weeks, if you look pale, if your periods are heavy, if you are pregnant and feeling wiped out, or if you have noticed blood in your stool or very dark stools. These are worth checking calmly and early.

Some situations need urgent care, not an appointment next week. If you have chest pain, severe breathlessness at rest, fainting, or a fast pounding heart that will not settle, call 108 or go to the nearest emergency hospital straight away. Anaemia should be sorted out before it strains your heart, not after.

The honest bottom line

Iron-deficiency anaemia is common, it is understandable, and most people feel much better once the cause is found and the right care begins. Outcomes vary from person to person, and steady improvement follows a correct diagnosis rather than any quick fix. If the tests point to a problem that needs a procedure, such as investigating bleeding in the gut, we will evaluate you and guide you at our Viman Nagar clinic and arrange that step with our accredited partner hospitals, then continue your follow-up with us.
